The Castle Pass Trek is the perfect trip for anyone who considers themselves “backpacking-curious”, or for those who are stoked to wander at a more relaxed pace. It is the most beginner friendly trek.
Just over 23 miles in length, the highest elevation reached on this remote jaunt is 11,100ft, over the non-technical Castle Pass.
The trip originates from a trailhead west of the town of Crested Butte and concludes further south, deep in the West Elk Mountains.
The route winds far away from all things familiar, meandering through oft forgotten valleys and past mind-boggling rock castles.
This time of the year, the wildflowers will be exploding in all their dew-dazzled glory across the valley floors.
Beyond the wildflowers and sweeping views, the beauty of the West Elk Wilderness lies in how infrequently it is traveled—a hidden gem, stashed just out of reach—the only sensible way to explore it’s wild breadth is with a pack on your back and the wherewithal to spend a few nights “out”.
Plus, this trek concludes with a hot town meal; which provides the perfect opportunity to reminisce over what you and your group have just accomplished.

All your trail meals taken care of and a post-trip meal in the town of Crested Butte
