The Storm Pass Trek is an epic 3 day, 2 night backpacking adventure in the West Elk Wilderness (WEW).

On this journey, we traverse the entirety of the WEW, wandering through ancient aspen groves, crossing babbling creeks & trapsing through alpine meadows.

As we hike, we soak in views of The Castles from all angles until we reach the crux of our adventure: Storm Pass.

Storm Pass is a stunning 12,460ft saddle which shares a ridge with West Elk Peak, the highest point in the WEW.

Reaching the top of the pass is a massive accomplishment, especially when you consider how far you and your crew have traveled to get there.

No hike ends at the top of the pass or peak, though; we cannot teleport ourselves down to the trailhead. Luckily, the hike out along Mill Creek is absolutely breathtaking (the whole way!).

Your trek begins in the land of laccoliths and ends among towering configurations of volcanic rock—an ever-evolving landscape—by its end, you will feel you have traveled much further than 27 miles.

After three full days of exploring in the wilderness, it’s time to relax, reminisce, and enjoy some town food, don’t you think?

Here is what you get when you book the Storm Pass Trek:

  • All the lightweight backpacking gear you need for an epic weekend exploring in the backcountry

  • All your trail meals taken care of and a post-trip meal in the town of Crested Butte

  • A shuttle to and from the trailhead(s)

  • A qualified guide who knows the area where you are traveling and is so stoked to share its magic with you!

  • 27 miles (43.5km)

  • no point on the route exceeds 12,460ft

  • you can expect to walk roughly 9 miles/day
